The MBA Decision: Why Going Back to School Changed My Game
Why I Went Back to School After Running a SaaS
Hi Real Life Rails readers,
Ever find yourself questioning a decision that feels completely backward? That was me, staring at an MBA application after running a successful SaaS business. What could an MBA teach me that I didn’t already know? Well, as it turns out: a lot.
Let me explain why going back to school wasn’t just a detour—it was a game-changer.
When I signed up for the MBA, I was already a self-taught entrepreneur. Cash flow? Market research? Been there, done that. But I didn’t realize what I was missing: not just the vocabulary so I could hold meaningful conversations with other business leaders, but the whole underpinning of knowledge and structure. It was like learning a language by working at a grocery store: you end up only knowing how to talk about the groceries!
If you’re considering taking your entrepreneurial skills to the next level, here are a few lessons I took from my MBA:
Speak the Language: Understanding business terms isn’t just about sounding smart—it’s about connecting with others who can help you grow.
Learn the Frameworks: You can’t build a strong house without a solid foundation, and the same goes for businesses.
Expand Your Network: An MBA doesn’t just teach you concepts—it introduces you to people who can challenge, inspire, and guide you.
